Well trained and informed Supervisors are a legal must, therefore an additional day for supervisors, which emphasises the key role that supervisors have in securing health and safety, includes safety communications and risk assessments.
The course itself involves a significant amount of trainee participation. Most contractors' personnel know something about the topics before they arrive, and lively discussions are often the order of the day.
In presenting the course, the trainers talk with the trainees rather than at them, giving the continuous message "If you can’t do it safely, don’t do it".
The award of the Safety Passport is subject to the candidate successfully completing 4 multiple-choice test papers. Successful candidates receive a plasticised photographic pass that is valid for three years. Upon expiry a one day Renewal has to be taken. To assist the administration of the scheme, all records are computerised on a database maintained by the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB).
